With the development and expansion of automation and intelligence, there are still all sorts of challenges (e.g., energy consumption, heterogeneity problems, and integration methodology) for the design of green Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Recently, the popularity of CPS (e.g., intelligent manufacturing, intelligent transportation systems, and smart home) has brought about some epoch-making industrial revolution. The design problems of green CPS should be considered from the perspective of the innovative circuit and system design methodologies.

The design methodologies for green CPS will involve a variety of areas, including embedded systems, pervasive computing, wired/wireless networks, mobile computing, multi-agent technology, etc. The backgrounds and motivations of this special issue are as follows: 1) the software design methodologies of green CPS must adapt to rapidly changing hardware circuit and saving-energy; 2) the software modeling has been widely used in green embedded design, which should consider hardware factors during the design of software test, debugging and validation, reconfigurable software modeling, and software integration framework; 3) the real-time performance within the context of software and hardware constraints is always the critical issues and challenges for many applications; 4) the safety, reliability, adaptability, reconfigurability, fault-tolerance and privacy of green CPS are always very important. Also, the coordinated hardware and software systems have extremely self-management capabilities and guarantee the stabilization of systems in practice; and 5) it is a great challenge for designers and developers to ensure correctness and reliability of interaction behaviors among green devices in CPS.

The high-quality papers reporting novel research results addressing relevant issues and challenges are invited, and specifically, papers that relate to the following topics:

  •    Heterogeneous modeling and simulation of CPS;

  •    Interactions, co-design and tight integration of cyber- and physical sub-systems;

  •    Heterogeneous low-power computing platforms for CPS;

  • ?   Formal methods for interaction behaviors among devices of green CPS;

  • ?   Intelligent interface and visualization system;

  • ?   Collaborative energy-saving design of hardware and software;

  • ?   Collaborative design methods of hardware/software;

  • ?   Programming model and compiler supporting multi-core architecture and real-time performance;

  • ?   Modeling and code generation tools, system validation and confirmation for CPS;

  • ?   The networked and distributed architecture for CPS;

  • ?   System architecture with autonomy, flexibility, reliability, security, and availability;

  • ?   Adaptive prediction mechanisms and models;
